Yoga Sutra 1
Here is the first teaching: atha yoga-anushasanam अथ योगानुशासनम् Now begins the practice of #yoga. When? Now. When? Now. Now. Come present. See things as they are in this moment. Drop the story. Breathe this breath. Do this down dog. Love this experience. Now. But that can take some work, this presence. A lot of past comes into the present, we carry the old story forward and it crowds out what’s next or what’s possible. Neuroscience tells us that even human time perception is warped: we over or underestimate time passing depending on dopamine signals, which are released in alignment with how motivated we are to move toward a thing (attraction) or to move away from a thing (withdrawal). When time dilates we experience and capture more frames per second, memories become more detailed. Science also documents how our memories are warped, especially when trauma or overwhelm is present, or our meaning making is confused. It tells us how our filters, family patterns and cultural patterns cause us to focus on or even see different things, or how we draw different conclusions from the same moment. The more I clear my traumas and stories, the more I polish my lenses to meet the current moment with fresh eyes, the more present I can be, and the greater the chance I can attune to what’s needed now, to what’s emergent now. Last night I visited an old story. I asked my dreams to give me insight. I woke up with the answer. And then I got on the mat and gave it my all. Always beginning. Now. .#yogasutras #yogasutrasofpatanjali #lifeisyoga #traumahealing #attunement #presence (Thank you Aubree @[17841400948753568:6057:] for the winter season glow up!)
