After Science and #consciousness #tsc2023

The current best "model of the mind" is stuck in computing metaphors. This biases the wired circuitry of neurons. But "neurons are the mind" is like saying "trees are the forest". Mind is more ecosystem than simple switches. @tamhunt10 from @ucsantabarbara @metalab points to electromagnetic fields emanating from wired neurons; he and @jonathanschooler are advancing a General Resonance Theory of consciousness which goes beyond this limiting metaphor.

This feels directionally correct... think of the nested ecologies and systems occurring in the organic world... in an actual forest.

Mind in this case would use all of the forces, it would be an emergent orchestra of the mechanical, the chemical, electrical, harmonic, and photonic... both wired and wireless..... within the skull, within the envelope of the meat suit, and outside of it too, in a dance with the whole field of existence, the field of awareness, the rest of earth. Mind relies on the binary's simplicity and the quad code's GATC complexity, and also on fractals and archetypes. The mind is the whole body (and it's gravitational core is likely the heart).

Its connections sprawl in all dimensions: lateral, vertical, mycelial... a full sphere of interaction. At every scale, it undulates and pulses, influenced by inhabitants of the internal and external biome, by internal and external weather. In relationship with all elements and forces and supposed others.

#AI would require a body to be #conscious. To know the world, as a field reality, it needs wetware and 360 field awareness. It needs values to know what to pay attention to. It needs intentionality, purpose. It needs a point of view and a personal history. It needs living context. It needs an integrated model of mind, where consciousness is embodied, arising, emergent and cocreated.

#largelanguagemodels are amazing. They are however derivative. All of their genius rests on the aggregated direct experience of actual embodied beings. We can use these tools to make life easier, and to do more and more original things. Out of the doldrums of rote repitition. This can be freeing. We will economically adjust.
