Founder Letter: Sorrow Points to Love
Dear Rosies,
This week I just want to hold a bowed head for the girls at Camp Mystic, and their families and communities. To let the heart be tender and alive with kinship for these littles - and for all the innocent children worldwide upended by fire and flood, natural and unnatural disasters, unnatural violence.
Most of us try so hard to protect our children in daily life. We offer love, create safe spaces in our homes and circles to give them the best chance to grow into whole, joyful beings. Point them to the wonder and the beauty and the best parts of being human. Help them develop an inner compass and an understanding of the world. We do our best with what we have to make a world within a world that feels kind and steady, and at the same time exciting.
Yes, there will always be things out of our control, and when those happen, we feel our way through, communally. We grieve and learn and remember.
But there are also many things that cause suffering for innocents that we CAN impact. Military actions that catch kids in the crossfire or scare them or strip them of their homes. Whether they have clean air water and adequate food. Whether parents are supported. Whether school is a safe place to be. You could add to this list.
When something like this flood happens, there's a purity in the heart's response. The suddenness catches us unaware and there's a window to our truest heart. Here, we aren't numb. Here, we can feel the other.
May we use this sorrow as a pointer to love, to greater awareness, and to invite attention on the more persistent threats to our youngest ones, and activate for a world that cares for all of its children, in all dimensions. Let this open a new window in the heart.
One world, one people, one family,
